CUMMING - Bill Norman, owner of Norman's Landing Restaurant, awarded more than $1,400 to Literacy Forsyth, a non-profit provider of adult literacy services in Forsyth County.
The funds were raised through the annual Ping-Pong Tournament sponsored by the restaurant last March. In an award ceremony held today, Norman presented an oversized check for the amount to Fonda Harrison, chair of Literacy Forsyth.
Each year, Norman's selects a local charity to receive the proceeds from the amateur tournament held at the restaurant. This year, Literacy Forsyth was chosen for its work in providing free tutoring and classes for low-level and non-reading adults in the county.
"We chose Literacy Forsyth because we believe the work they do is so important to our community and to our future," said Norman.
This year's donation is in keeping with a long tradition of charitable giving. Since 1995, Norman's Landing has contributed more than $933,000 to charitable organizations in the community.
In tough economic times, non-profits like Literacy Forsyth are especially grateful for the funding. "We deeply appreciate Bill's financial support of our program," said Fonda Harrison, Chair of Literacy Forsyth. "Demand for our services is stronger than ever as adults find they must increase their skills to compete in a highly competitive job market."
